Express Course One: Motion in the ocean: monitoring and modelling nearshore waves for coastal management applications
Dr Tom Doyle: Senior Scientist, Coastal and Marine – NSW DCCEEW
Tom Doyle is a research scientist (coastal and marine) within the Science and Insights Division of the NSW Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW), with experience that also spans university, private and local government sectors. His research interests are focused on the geomorphology and eco-morphodynamics of the coastal zone and his research covers a range of topics from foredune morphology and ecology, dune evolution through time, coastal processes, human impacts of coastal systems, to the monitoring of various coastal environments using GIS and remote sensing techniques. Tom currently co-leads the state-wide science program for DCCEEW, which aims to collect high resolution data (inc. waves, and seabed mapping) to underpin NSW coastal management (inc. CMPs).
Express Course Two: Tidal inundation risk assessment and adaptation planning
The express course will take a look at developing and applying a coastal hazard risk assessment. We’ll discuss important concepts about risk, likelihood, and consequence; explore how risk assessment outputs can be used for effective adaptation and decision-making; and demonstrate some practical tips and tricks for developing a high quality output along the way.
Stephanie Doumtsis: Coastal Scientist - Alluvium Consulting
Stephanie Doumtsis is a coastal scientist at Alluvium Consulting, with a technical background in coastal geomorphology and physical geography. Stephanie has a breadth of experience delivering a range of coastal management, adaptation planning and coastal processes projects for local and state government agencies across Australia and the Torres Strait Islands. She has a strong interest in GIS analysis, UAVs, remote sensing, beach morphodynamics, and geomorphic change, and is particularly passionate about science communication. As a visual learner herself, Stephanie understands the importance of creating clear, engaging, and impactful visual products. She brings an energetic and approachable communication style to her work, making complex and technical coastal concepts accessible and engaging for audiences of all backgrounds.
Stephanie is excited to deliver an express course at AusYCSEC and empower the next generation of coastal scientists, engineers, and professionals, one map at a time.
Michael Rosenthal: Senior Coastal and Environmental Consultant - RHELM
Michael has 10 years’ experience in consulting spanning coastal hazards, adaptation policy, and environment and planning law. He specialises in the management of coastal and estuarine environments, with a focus on hazard and risk assessment, climate change adaptation, and the development of strategic and policy-based responses to coastal risks.
