Meeanjin

Brisbane, QLD

Brisbane, traditionally known as Meeanjin — the place of the blue water lilies — is a vibrant river city where culture, creativity and connection come together. AusYCSEC acknowledges the Turrbal people as the Traditional Custodians of this place and pays respect to Elders past and present.

Brisbane is a thriving hub of youth, innovation and collaboration, making it an ideal location to come together during the AusYCSEC Conference. The Brisbane Local Hub will provide a welcoming space to connect in person, take part in conference sessions, and share ideas with fellow coastal, estuarine, and marine enthusiasts.

Tarntanya

Adelaide, SA

Kaurna Meyunna are the Aboriginal people of the Adelaide region. Kaurna Meyunna Yerta, the Kaurna peoples’ traditional Country, extends from Cape Jervis in the south to Crystal Brook in the north, and from the Mount Lofty Ranges to the coast of Gulf Saint Vincent. This region encompasses what is now the city of Adelaide and its surrounding areas, reflecting the deep cultural significance of this land to the Kaurna people.

We acknowledge Tarntanya (red kangaroo) as the land on which Adelaide is situated and pay our respects to the Kaurna people as the Traditional Custodians of this place, and to Elders past and present.

Adelaide is a city known for its strong environmental leadership, coastal connections, and collaborative community making it an ideal location for an AusYCSEC Local Hub. The Adelaide Hub will be a welcoming space to gather during the AusYCSEC Conference, connect with peers, take part in shared sessions, and be part of national conversations shaping the future of our coasts, estuaries and oceans

Naarm

Melbourne, VIC

We acknowledge the diverse meanings of Narrm to both the Wurundjeri and Boonwurrung peoples of the Central Kulin Nation. By understanding and honouring the meanings of words like Narrm, we can cultivate greater appreciation and respect for the rich cultural heritage of First Nations peoples. As we continue to learn from and engage with Indigenous languages, we take meaningful steps toward reconciliation and cultural preservation.

Melbourne is a dynamic coastal city shaped by culture, research, and environmental leadership, making it a fitting host for an AusYCSEC Local Hub. The Melbourne Hub will provide a space for participants to come together during the AusYCSEC Conference to connect, share ideas, and engage with conference sessions alongside a strong local community of coastal, estuarine and marine practitioners.

Boorloo

Perth, WA

The City of Perth, known as Boorloo, sits on the Land (Country / boodja) of the Whadjuk people of the Nyoongar Nation. The Whadjuk people are the Traditional Owners of the land and waters where the city is located, forming part of the larger Nyoongar Nation which extends across the South West of Western Australia. We acknowledge the Whadjuk people as the Traditional Custodians of this place and pay respect to Elders past and present.

Perth is a coastal city deeply connected to the ocean and renowned for its marine science, coastal management, and community-led environmental action. The Perth Local Hub will offer a welcoming space to come together during the AusYCSEC Conference, connect with peers, and engage with conference sessions alongside Western Australia’s vibrant coastal and marine community.

Tāmaki Makaurau

Auckland, NZ

The Māori name for Auckland is Tāmaki, with Tāmaki‑makau‑rau — Tāmaki of a hundred lovers — among its many names. This name reflects the area’s highly desirable and fertile location at the hub of an extensive network of waterways, connecting travellers north, south, east and west. For centuries, different groups flourished here, cohabited, and at times displaced one another, highlighting the significance of this place as a centre of movement, connection and life.

Auckland’s strong relationship with the ocean and waterways makes it a natural location for an AusYCSEC Local Hub. The Auckland Hub will bring together participants during the AusYCSEC Conference to connect locally, engage with conference sessions, and share ideas across borders with a community passionate about coastal, estuarine and marine environments.

Viti

Suva, Fiji

Fiji is a Pacific Island nation deeply connected to the ocean, where land, sea and people are intrinsically linked. We acknowledge iTaukei, the Indigenous people of Fiji, as the Traditional Custodians of the lands and waters across the islands, and recognise the enduring cultural, spiritual and environmental knowledge that continues to shape life in Fiji.

Fiji sits at the heart of the Pacific, with coastal and marine environments central to community, culture and livelihoods. The Fiji Local Hub provides a valuable opportunity to connect during the AusYCSEC Conference, bringing together local and regional participants to share perspectives, experiences and solutions grounded in island and ocean stewardship.

The Australasian Young Coastal Scientists and Engineers Conference (AusYCSEC) respectfully acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of the lands and waters on which our local hubs are held. This includes the Turrbal people of Meeanjin (Brisbane), the Kaurna people of Tarntanya (Adelaide), the Wurundjeri and Boonwurrung peoples of the Central Kulin Nation in Narrm (Melbourne), and the Whadjuk people of the Nyoongar Nation in Boorloo (Perth).

We also acknowledge Tāmaki (Auckland) in Aotearoa New Zealand, recognising the significance of this place as a traditional hub of travel, connection and life, and we extend our respect to the many Indigenous peoples who have cared for this region over generations. In the Pacific, we acknowledge Viti (Fiji) and the iTaukei people as the Traditional Custodians of the lands and waters across the islands.

Across all locations, we recognise the enduring connection of First Nations and Indigenous peoples to land, sea and community, and we honour the knowledge, culture and stewardship that continues to guide care for coastal, estuarine and marine environments.

We pay our deepest respects to Elders past, present, and emerging, who have cared for these lands and waters since time immemorial. We acknowledge the profound cultural heritage, resilience, and enduring spirit of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and Māori, and we commit to fostering respect, understanding, and collaboration. As guests on these lands, we are privileged to conduct our work, research, and events in these beautiful and culturally significant places. We are dedicated to integrating Indigenous knowledge and perspectives into our practices and to creating spaces that celebrate and honour the deep connections that Traditional Owners have with Country.

AusYCSEC is committed to promoting meaningful engagement with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and Māori, and we strive to build a future where the voices, stories, and contributions of First Nations communities are valued and respected.

Once registration is open and you have registered your respective Local Hub host will be in contact with you to provide all necessary details for your hub including venue location, field trip, social events. It is the responsibility of each hub host to coordinate their respective hubs.
